I bought Calif sight unseen, in a weeks time, from a girl in Arizona who needed the money for her car insurance payment. Thank-you Julie Roche for telling me about this "nice puppy who was looking for a home." Calif grabbed my heart like Corey did, and I didn't think I'd ever feel that way about another afghan.
Calif got his first 2 points from the 9-12 puppy class by going breed over 2 specials! I was high! Darlene Anderson, his breeder in California, had Calif for a while and added a major and a few singles to the tally. We finished 3 years later on another high, 3 point major owner handled (it was the first time I had major pointed any of my dogs)!
I specialed Calif for a while and in 1994 he was 49th in the Breed Win System and 40th in the BIS/Group Win System, published in the Afghan Hound Review. Not bad for only showing at local shows!
Calif enjoyed not wearing his snood, chew bones, and less grooming, after he was retired. He sired one litter of 13 which was ill-fated and born premature, but the 4 surviving pups are doing well and includes a pointed son living in California. Calif died suddenly while I was away at dog shows, due to an apparent stroke. He leaves an empty place here that will not be easily filled.
